SCX F-1 70s/80s Race 7: Michael Smalley's Riverside Raceway

The most brilliant and beautiful SCX F1's

Michael driving his own car reversed the earlier result and forced Daniel into second.  Once again Chris Chan took 3rd and Nigel having a rare consistent day took 4th.  Jim Wiseman had left, and showing consistently was Bill S. taking the 5th place for his overall best day ever. This man has to be take seriously now! Thomas stopped talking about karaoke enough to up his placing, and then Craig, Jim W., Bill P, and Mike Pawl filled out the next spots.  Bruce took his inaugural spin at the track and Gary basically had enough at one point and walked away from track to finish any chance he had and the newbie’s, Karl, Ed, and John, perhaps expectedly on a tough track like this, rounded out the placings.

Race 6 TalaMonaco
Today was out first race day at Bruce's TalaMonaco, a 4 lane routed wood track with magnabraid using Trakmate lap counting through a deadstrip.  The challenge in this track is the extensive use of lame squeezes throught the track meaning self-control and the ability to pass in only one or two spots was crucial.  Of course the same two (Daniel and Michael) were at the top!  Bruce, Terry and Marc had done a great job getting the track built with help along the way from Gary and at the last night Michael and Thomas.

Daniel's win was his first ever in the F1 class, taking his new paintjob Minardi to a 3 lap win (just 12 seconds on this track where the average lap time is just around 4 seconds) over Michael, mostly driving his Ford Tyrrell until he wimped out in the 3rd heat!   Showing his car control and long-term experience Chris Chan took 3rd 8/10ths of a lap ahead of John Emmons who just pushed Rene into 5th by 1/10th of a lap.   Craig had great day coming 6th his highest inidividual result for the year 8/10ths of a lap ahead of Thomas in 7th with Stephen3 aps back in 8th.  Nigel beat Richard by just 1/10th of a lap in the last two Top 10 spots.  Special congratulations to Cameron Emmons and Jordan Talamon for racing with us for the first time and doing very well.

SCX F1 Race 4, FArrout Raceway

Well we had three momentous occurrences in this F1 race:

  • Michael Smalley took a well fought win over Chris R with a Tyrrell P34 6 wheeler!  However that was not what excited him.  What excited him enough to call me immediately after the race was something about the car actually being a Ford or something about it having a Ford engine.  Go figure, I thought we all used an SCX motor.  More seriously great to see the older style F1’s do so well
  • Mike Pawl took his FIRST EVER individual 4th place, a big breakthrough after his previous best of 8th this year, 5th twice in 2005 and 6th 3 times in 2004.  He did it with solid performances and 2 Top 5 of day on White and Orange
  • Stephen did not have to provide any loaners (thank you Michael for supplying the F1 and the 4WD loaners)

In other developments Chris R continued his good performances with a clear 2nd as did Daniel with a clear 3rd (we need to get both of them to drink more alcohol before during and after races), Thomas for a change was the second placed Loaner Car driver in 5th place just 2/10ths of a lap behind Mike P, Bill P reveled in his newly refurbished F1 car to take 6th ½ a lap behind that(courtesy of Daniel’s efforts), Jim Wolfe’s improvement continued only let down by a relatively poor run on Orange and ended up in a tie with the returning Bob Beck for 7th.  Nigel came 8th , Stephen enjoyed his way to 9th and Stan showed his promise on Red lane for 10th and in total was only 1/10th of a lap behind Stephen.

SCX Formula 1 Race 3: 6 May 2006

Ok, I admit it: I tried to get anyone who was in a heat with Rene to take him out, and I don't mean to dinner! Maybe next time I should offer a dinner since Chris Chan got soooo close to hitting him in one heat and the marshal's seemed determined to help me by knocking Rene off when marshalling other cars 3 times in another heat.  Yet I still lost to him by 4/10ths of a lap in the very last heat of the day thanks to coming off by myself and then seeing my car (and to be fair Daniel's and Michael's cars) being lovingly fondled by a marshal with a clear 1970's/80's F1 fetish for what was about a whole lap..........  I am sure Rene drove well but this is all about me darn it!!!

In other racing apparently happening on the same day, Daniel drove super strongly to be leading after 3 heats but the above mentioned last heat "issues" saw him finish a lap down in 3rd place, still it was his best result in F1 this year.  Jim Wolfe continued his hot day by taking his first ever 4th place a lap down on Daniel, where he just edged Chris "The Living Legend" Chan into 5th place by 4/10ths of a lap.  Michael came in 6th (also driving a "vintage" car like Stephen and Russell) the freight train nature of the 6 wheel Tyrrell not helping on Rene's track.

Bill P had a good 7th with a strong Top 5 of day run on White, ahead of Gary in 8th, who just beat Craig in 9th who had a Top 5 of day on Blue.  Dennis had a sub-par for him day to round out the Top 10 but did get a Top 5 of day on White.  Special mentions to Thomas with a Top 5 on Yellow and the same for Russell driving the Tyrrell into Top 5 on Blue lane.

SCX Formula 1 1970/80’s Race 2: 4 March 2006

For the second F1 race of the season we visited Chris Chan's Mr Model Car in Santa Monica for a trip round his Scalextric Sport Riverside layout.  Stephen (Williams FW07), Rene (Ligier JS11) and this time Micheal (Tyrrell P34 6-wheeler) went with the older style F1's and almost swept the podium but were pipped by a returning Chris R in his Minardi who took 1st from Stephen in 2nd by a mere 1/10th of a lap.  Your Beloved Benevolent Dictator nearly cried - it is the second F1 race in a row where he was denied 1st place by the smallest margin possible! Donations to the SFJ Recovery Fund can be made by PapPal or Credit Cards.

Just less than a lap behind in 3rd was Micheal, Rene was in 4th behind by 4/10ths, our host Chris C in a clear 5th, ahead of Daniel in 6th, Richard C (definitely a ring-in!) in 7th, a resurgent Tim in 8th just ahead of Nigel 9th and Mike P in 10th ahead of a tie for 11th between John E and Richard Z.

SCX Formula 1 1970/80’s Race 1: 7 January 2006

So Rene and Stephen made a pact: we would both run the older F1’s just because we love them rather than the newer Ferrari/Minardi/McLaren/Jordan’s – theoretically the older cars are slower and twitchier, courtesy of 10 extra grams higher up, but we just love them!  While we secretly hoped we would be able to stay with Michael’s Minardi, the reality was that he was too good despite having a relatively poor run on red.

Michael was 1st by 1/10th of a lap ahead of Stephen in 2nd, with Rene in 3rd by 4/10ths of a lap.  And guess who should be lurking in 4th again – Bob!  Bob held off Daniel in 5th by 1/10th of a lap.  In 6th was Nigel based on strong runs in Red and White with Thomas 2/10ths of a lap behind in 7th.  Eric’s 8th was his second best result ever in the sprint races (across all classes).  In 9th was Bill P with newbie Richard in 10th again (he will be going up a bracket for the next race J).

Again – like in 2WD – note the Top 5 of day on Red lane by Richard C and on White lane by Mike Pawl.  Mike beat both Rene and Stephen in heat when he did his run on White lane.
