Series Race 7
2009 Race 41
Nov. 7, 2009
Nigelstone

Other than the aforementioned braid issues, nothing really went wrong. Heat 9 was the star of the day, with all four combatants (Michael Smalley, Terry De Los Santos, Daniel Snipes, Craig Williamson) not only over 19 laps, but also within two-tenths of each other. The leader of the heat at any time could not hold his lead throughout, so there was plenty of position shifting and first-to-last movement. In the end, the usual suspects took their usual places on the usual podium. Since we've seen this movie before…

Scalextric Trans-Am
Series Race 6
2009 Race 37
Oct. 17, 2009
Woodside Raceway

Two small technical matters delayed the start; a piece of warped track had to be replaced to stop pinching on the red lane (see what happens when you leave your records in the sun, kids?) and one of the loaners developed a fault in the driveline with the motor shaft spinning on the pinion; it was subsequently retired. When the dust settled (literally; Gary was blowing off the track with an electric leaf blower), the usual suspects (Michael Smalley, Daniel Snipes, and Terry De Los Santos) finished in their usual places, give or take a position. Craig Williamson and Eddie Shorer rounded out the top five.

2009 Race 32
Sep. 5, 2009
Mr. Model Car Raceway

"Life's Labors Lapped"

An entirely too long three week respite was cured this weekend by Meet 17 of the OTHG World Championship, another consecutive team race at Mister ModelCar's Riverside Raceway. With the return of Tom Giese, one of our erstwhile members, as well as the return of the Vasquez sons and Elliot Rick, now known as the Future Slot Car Racers of America (hey, farmers have a branch, why not us?), an enjoyable event took place, even if it was slightly late in starting due to conflicting e-mails (Gary, what have we told you about using the club list for this??? And an e-mail from March?-lol). Tom Giese set pole for TeamWilliamson (Craig, Chris Chan, Tom, Stan Smith, Jeff Vasquez), with Team Smalley (Mike, Eddie Shorer, Christophe Deluy) second, and Team DLS (Terry, Thomas Lauffenberger, Nigel Rick, Stephen Farr-Jones) third; the boys were defaulted to fourth.

The opening stage wasn't too eventful, except that the wrong button for a track call was pressed, accidentally abandoning the heat. Cool heads prevailed and sorted out the confusion, and with all four cars working, a tight three-way battle developed, loosening up toward the end. Team Smalley had a 5.5 lap lead over Team DLS, but stretched out a 21-lap advantage over Team Williamson.

Opel showed up after the first heat and fed us some Indian food that we'll rave about for days (not to mention taste for several days); after our feast, the second stanza went smoothly, with the order unchanged but the margins increased substantially-33 laps at halftime.

To make a short report even shorter, nothing of note, except the usual abuse of the membership, occurred during the final two rounds. Owing to that, let's just cut to the chase...

Scalextric Trans-Am
Series Race 3
2009 Race 12
Apr. 4, 2009
Circuit Villeneuve

Strangely enough, with the class where pounding and knerfing was expected the most, it didn't happen; cleaner driving was the rule of the day, probably due to previous experience, and this had a positive effect on overall scores; scores in excess of 24 laps were more common than usual. This was also a race in which the usual suspects, all three in attendance this time, were given a true test. They still managed to rip the hearts out of the others, but they didn't lock it out this time; Craig Williamson managed silver, while a racer who will go unnamed managed to miss fourth by a mere tenth, settling for a still acceptable fifth, with the bronze position only 0.6 laps ahead.

Scalextric Trans-Am
Series Race 2
2009 Race 8
Mar. 7, 2009
Autodromo Baia della Sud

The tintops took over the second race, and again, the Autodromo threw everything it had at them; on the hard Artin track, anything with glazed tires was slipping and sliding and going nowhere. Speaking of going nowhere, yours truly retired from this one as not one, but two, loaner cars went south in the same heat (hence the subtitle); no idea what was done to anger the slot gods, but I got it from them alright.

Selected driver quotes:
Tim Weston: "Thought I did better than I did"
Opel Barnes: "I was tired of being a sandwich between those two!" (On her finishes between Tim and Russell)
Mike Smalley: "NEXT??" (Actually embellished by yours truly)

2009 Race 5
Feb. 7, 2009
Silverlake Speedway

Well, like I said, the usual suspects retained their usual places, so, here goes:

Yours Truly: So, your comments on another typical win?

Michael Smalley (winner): It wasn't usual or typical at all; they were tippy and required extra discipline. It came down to those who could stay on…and my AAR 'Cuda.

YT: You were pessimistic about your chances not having been with us for some time; your thoughts now?

Chris Radisich (2nd): (Too overcome to comment)

YT: So how does it feel to be the newest member of the Usual Suspects, and backing it up with a bronze in this one?

Terry DLS (3rd): Too much pressure; can't we just get along? I do miss Daniel not being here, though; both of the Chrises drove well; I only just beat Chan.
