Autodromo Baia della Sud

With the green lane still out of commission, it became a glorified qualifying session with the open-wheelers. (There was a brief delay between the races as blue started to turn finicky, but at least that lane was fixed and worked well until the very end; when it died during the final heat, we called it short and added 4.1 laps to each total.) Since Michael Smalley didn't need this race, having already sewn up the class title, he raced like it, allowing Eddie Shorer to take victory, followed by Craig Williamson and Mike Pawl.

Series Race 6
2009 Race 36
Oct. 3, 2009
Circuit Villeneuve

Now the cars that are most ill-suited for this track took over, and there was plenty of tire-rubbing from the start; the smoothed last straight was welcome for these angry types; as usual, there was more punting than a rugby game. When the Ortmann dust settled down, his majesty Mike Smalley won again, but Nigel Rick put in a splendid performance to capture silver, while yours truly managed a giant leap for mankind to jump from eighth to third at the final bell.

The quickies came out for the second race of the day, but this time we had some surprises, not the least of which was Bob Beck, who displaced two of the usual suspects for bronze. Craig Williamson had a good fourth, while US Terry DLS managed an uncustomary seventh.

May. 30, 2009
Mr. Model Car Raceway

Once again the open wheelers did battle at Mister ModelCar, and the usual carnage ensued; picking a place to pass required forethought and patience. The Gang of Four, consisting of the three usual suspects plus Craig Williamson, took the top four places without much argument from the rest of us, with Stan Smith, Gary Woods and your intrepid race reporter rounding out the top seven. Especially painful for Daniel Snipes, who took second, was that the margin of victory was as small as could be-a mere 0.1 laps.

SCX F1 1970/80's
Series Race 3
2009 Race 14
Apr. 18, 2009
Riverside Raceway

Meet 8 of the OTHG World Championship happened at Smalley's Riverside, and was the second team race of the year, a race that usually puts a sense of dread in the hearts of those who wonder with whom they'll be saddled (er, teamed). With all but one of the registrants present, two drivers were pressed into double duty-Opel Barnes for Team De Los Santos (Terry, J.R. Ewing, Tim Weston), and Ed Beer for Team Chan (Chris, Thomas Lauffenberger, Russell Bracher). Team DLS won pole, followed by Team Smalley (Mike, Gary Woods, Nigel Rick, Opel), Team Williamson (Craig, Stan Smith, Mike Pawl, Ed) and Team Chan.

The first quarter saw not much unusual; the wider track allowed for harder racing without the risk of punting. Team Williamson did have a pit emergency, though, as its car needed work outside the usual pit window. After one stanza, though, there was a definite order taking shape as Team Smalley, on yellow, opened up a 14 lap advantage, followed by Team Williamson. Teams DLS and Chan were left to sort out third, a good 30 laps down already.

Leg two had another early oddity, this time for Team Smalley, forcing an early pit; otherwise, it was "Snooze City" (literally for yours truly). Team Chan put up good blue numbers to leapfrog Team Williamson for second; Team DLS was still last but finished with the dreaded outers. Smalley had two 370+ legs and were cemented in front.

Team Williamson had the anomaly during the third portion-actually, they had it twice; under rules adopted for the race, they were hit with an additional minute inaction penalty (like a second pit stop), which may have seemed like a death knell. This caused no end of consternation and will probably be reviewed before the next team event; FIA, however, decided to stay mum on the subject. Team Smalley led by a 51 lap margin, and Team Williamson seemed consigned to last, but second was still in play.

The final leg saw another team hit with the dead car problem; Team Chan had to pit early, then force a track call when its loaner failed due to attrition. Team DLS caught Team Chan for second, and everything held station after that. The margin first-to-last was a record 90 laps.

The race was run with four beautiful, early seventies era Formula 1 cars that we don't normally see in our regular SCX F1 races. Some of these cars may not be as competitive as the cars fielded for our usual races, so the team format was ideal for getting these great looking cars on the track. All of the cars were expertly prepared by Michael Smalley, and were a lot of fun to drive and watch.

Series Race 2
2009 Race 9
Mar. 7, 2009
Autodromo Baia della Sud

There were the requisite power issues, but they were minor this time, with just a smoothing of the copper tape solving the dilemma. What went unsolved was the constant problem endemic with open-wheel racing-the punting. The yellow lane also threw a nasty surprise at unwary drivers-an off-camber approach combined with a bump-style flatspot in the turn that unsettled many a competitor (not to mention their cars). Two of the usual suspects, Michael Smalley and Terry De Los Santos, grabbed the top spots on the podium, with Chris Chan third, Mike Pawl an impressive fourth, and Daniel Snipes fifth.

Selected driver quotes:
Chris Chan: "Bloody moron!!" (Not know to whom this was directed)
SFJ: "I really enjoyed being sandwiched between Opel and Smalley during the race." (Virginia, if you're reading this, skip to the table below.)

Jan. 31, 2009
Nigelstone

The open-wheelers made their debut today, and this is the class that yours truly usually does well with, and this was true today as well, hanging around the top five all race, finishing a well-done fourth. One of the usual suspects was late getting to the race, but he made it in time to do his four stints, and he still showed a strong third even with no practice. Our host and the circuit's namesake, Nigel Rick, said under his breath during the webcast, "This is going to be a tight race", and indeed it was, with the podium spread by only 0.4 laps, with yours truly merely 1.5 laps down. There were three ties among the 21 competitors, and, to show just how close it was, fourth through eighteenth-sixteen racers, counting the tie for 18th-tallied a spread of only 4.4 laps! If space permits, I'll do a chart showing how close this was.
