Nov. 7, 2009

Again nothing much happened out of the ordinary, except for a counting fault in the timing and scoring system, which was quickly rectified. The Parma controllers were kept instead of the PMs, and this did not seem to have a detrimental effect on the racing. Again, Michael, Terry and Daniel routed the rest of us like a wood track.

Ninco GT1 Le Mans
Series Race 5
2009 Race 39
Oct. 24, 2009
Autodromo Baia della Sud

In the words of the late Gilda Radner playing her Rosanne Rosannadanna character, "It just goes to show you, Jane, it's always something," and that something was a recurring power issue on the green lane, so bad that it required the exclusion of the green scores. (Smalley had a mild fit about this, while Christophe celebrated quietly, but that's neither here nor there.) The holes in this week's tables reflect this, as well as how it impacted the overall race scores. Mike Smalley, despite having a good score on green nullified, managed to still win the race, followed by Eddie Shorer and Terry De Los Santos. With this race, two events remain for the class, but the Drivers Championship is settled.

Ninco GT1 Le Mans
Series Race 4
2009 Race 20
Jun. 6, 2009
Farrout Raceway

With our Francophonic guests, we raced our Nincos hard at the track where it all began, and they gave a decent account of themselves for drivers accustomed to magnet racing. It also gave yours truly something do to between heats-brush up on his French, which hopefully everyone will pardon. "Les hommes habituelles", Michael and Daniel, took their usual places on the podium, but Bill Schniedewind took a healthy third, followed by your intrepid reporter. Unusually telling was that our dear leader, SFJ, finished out of the points for the first time since we can remember; what this says for the future of the club has yet do be determined.

Ninco GT1 Le Mans
Series Race 3
2009 Race 17
May. 16, 2009
Autodromo Baia della Sud

Another glorious day at Curcuito Baia Della Sud was enjoyed by only nine racers who gathered for a team race in the Ninco Le Mans GT1 class; with this odd number of contestants, we had to do a first-ever three-team event (so everyone makes the podium-feels like first grade, no?) Team Williamson (Craig, J.R. Ewing, Mike Pawl) took pole for the race, followed by Team Lauffenberger (Thomas, Gary Woods, Ed Beer) and Team De Los Santos (Terry, Eddie Shorer, Stan Smith).

With the red lane declared out of play, the other three performed well; while there were some power issues, they were met with speedy in-race maintenance by Gary and his plastic spade. This, though, couldn't save another shortcoming: the need for spread braids. This handicap struck Team L on the blue lane during the first round (of only three) and put them in a hole 26 laps deep after the first two rounds. Team Williamson had a lead, but merely 2.1 laps, after two rounds, with the troubled blue lane to come.

A handicap that struck all of us: stint length. To drive a full three hours, we lengthened the rounds to 60 minutes, so each driver drove 20 uninterrupted minutes. Needless to say, we had some twitchy trigger fingers for awhile.

One other performance to note: during the second round, we almost had a recurrence of the great no-lap performance at Rene's last year; for almost 60 laps, Ed Beer, Stan Smith and Mike Pawl held station in the opening minutes. It was great stuff to see.

In the end, the "blue curse" was upheld as Team DLS overtook Team Williamson for the outright lead with about 25 minutes to go.

Ninco GT1 Le Mans
Series Race 2
2009 Race 10
Mar. 21, 2009
Mr. Model Car Raceway

A small controversy led this race; the first heat was well-raced, but the scores indicated that it was too well-raced; someone set the timer to five minutes instead of three, so the scores were unrealistic (the winner logging some 40 circuits). Two solutions were posited-either rerun the heat or take the scores and multiply by 60%; acting race director Russ Bracher decided that the heat would be rerun, and at the end of the regular schedule. (What effect this would have on the scores is now a matter of academic debate, but I'm sure we're all itching to know what could have been.) The usual suspects in attendance took the top two spots, with Bob Scott picking up the final podium place. Racing in the class was some of the cleanest we've seen in some time, which, combined with the less technical aspects of this circuit, combined for statistically bunched scores, with the last-place driver still scoring 90% of the winner's total.

2009 Race 6
Feb. 7, 2009

Some random comments:

Yours Truly: What's your impression on your first championship action with the OTHG World Championship?

Ron Mesh (11th): Competitive, fast and furious action…and can we say that without copyright infringement? Cars were fun to drive, and the track was challenging. I'll be back to take down Smalley (maybe I'll hide his glove)

YT: Your thoughts, Eddie?

Eddie Shorer (4th): Of all the races I've been in, this was certainly one of them.
