Ninco 1949-62 Le Mans
Series Race 7
2009 Race 44
Dec. 5, 2009
Circuit Villeneuve

Nothing out of the ordinary happened; the usual bumping and crowding more resemblant of a NASCAR race occurred, with the usual riders and still some miscounting, but nothing like previous races. The usual suspects (Mike Smalley and Terry De Los Santos), along with suspect-in-training Craig Williamson, took the podium positions.

"Drive Like A Pirate Day"

Owing to the knuckleheads who started this unofficial yet wonderfully flippant holiday, a dozen hearties battled it out on the high asphalt of Craig's Silverlake Eight (known alternatively as the Evil 8, the Nause-8, the Discombobu-l-8, and even as the Super 8, although this last one is to be discouraged due to pending legal action from the hotel chain, not to mention the gratuitous porn film references. With our once-in-every-five-years opportunity to race on "Talk Like A Pirate Day", here be the skinny on the day's developments. (Gratuitous "Arrghs" were added later.)

Nothing unusual happened, so there be not much to report these parts, save the outcome of the battle; suffice it to say that "Yars Truly" (a way to work in that pirate thing) saved me best shot for last and salvaged a top-half finish.

Series Race 5
2009 Race 26
Jul. 18, 2009
Nigelstone

Other than a small mistake with color coordination on the score sheet by yours truly (which was done at 2 a.m. while watching The Blue Collar Comedy Tour), quickly corrected by SFJ, not much out of the ordinary happened. With the temperatures, the track was slippery, and the skinny tires made for some squirrelly driving. Minus Daniel Snipes, the other two usual suspects were one-two, with Bob Beck making a good run for bronze, Stan Smith close on their heels in fourth, and suspect-in-training Craig Williamson fifth.

Ninco 1949-62 Le Mans
Series Race 3
2009 Race 15
May. 2, 2009
Targa Florio

An old habit had to be broken-namely, calling a racer in a particular car as opposed to a particular lane, especially since the lanes were shared. With the congestion of four cars in two lanes (actually, in one stretch, one lane, and that with a wicked hairpin), there were plenty of collisions and pile-ups with the track blocked on more than one occasion; the town square in the upper right of the layout was especially prone to close calls and T-bones. The teething problems of this circuit also made themselves known; car 4 was not counting properly, which led to some wild variance in lap counts. SFJ made the executive decision to award a flat 12 laps to everyone as a default score for that car (and so as not to screw up the driver metrics), thus taking that car out of play.

Ninco 1949-62 Le Mans
Series Race 2
2009 Race 7
Feb. 21, 2009
Cruzin Raceway

One venue in the OTHG World Championship had only one opportunity to host a race, and it did so on this cheerful late winter day in Ventura, as Cruzin' Bob Scott hosted meet 4 of the tourney. With all the quality circuits available for distraction (and, by the way, for sale, as Bob is quitting his brick-and-mortar business and concentrating on the mobile side), more juice was being consumed than the world's largest preschool birthday party. Sixteen drivers mated nicely into our usual four teams, with Eddie Shorer of Team Smalley (Michael, Eddie, Stephen Farr-Jones, Opel Barnes) taking the only-ever pole on the track. Team De Los Santos (Terry, Chris Chan qualifying, Stan Smith, J.R. Ewing) snatched vice-pole, Team Scott (Cruzin' Bob, Bob Beck, Nigel Rick, Ed Beer) culled third choice, and Team Williamson (Craig, Thomas Lauffenberger, Bill Schniedewind, Gary Woods) was stuck. Bob used only four channels of a six-lane track to host this unique team round.
The first three stanzas seemed uneventful, and with the new track, it was difficult to determine which of the lanes was the fast one. On reflection after these rounds, blue was marginally faster, with yellow just behind, and red (isn't it always red?) the slowpoke. At the three-quarters pole, Team DLS was leading, with Team Scott only 7 laps down (about 38 seconds of racing). Team Smalley was 23 laps in arrears, and Team Williamson 35 circuits to the wrong side.
The final trip was fraught with drama, and at the finish, Team Scott barely overhauled Team DLS by seven-tenths for the win. Team Smalley garnered bronze, while Team Williamson was a beaten mule, 30 laps down.

Nothing new under the sun here; with a home-track advantage it would be surmised that Michael Smalley would win, and he did. (Rumors were flying about that at Ladbrokes, odds for him were standing at odds-on 100:1, and that was whether they were taking any action at all.) Daniel Snipes and Terry De Los Santos, one who will graduate to the class of "Usual Suspect" some time this year, rounded out the podium.
