Drivers' Championship
Series Race 7
2009 Race 39
Oct. 24, 2009
Autodromo Baia della Sud

In the words of the late Gilda Radner playing her Rosanne Rosannadanna character, "It just goes to show you, Jane, it's always something," and that something was a recurring power issue on the green lane, so bad that it required the exclusion of the green scores. (Smalley had a mild fit about this, while Christophe celebrated quietly, but that's neither here nor there.) The holes in this week's tables reflect this, as well as how it impacted the overall race scores. Mike Smalley, despite having a good score on green nullified, managed to still win the race, followed by Eddie Shorer and Terry De Los Santos. With this race, two events remain for the class, but the Drivers Championship is settled.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 6
2009 Race 29
Aug. 1, 2009
Silverlake Speedway

With our only full championship race done, we held a "special stage" of rally cars-a host's choice-for the Drivers' Championship. (This will not appear on the master scorecard, but it will be in the H Championship.) Between races the orange controller was fixed and ran flawlessly for the duration. Nothing strange happened this time, other than hometrack hero Craig inexplicably missing a podium; the other two usual suspects, coupled with Bruce Talamon, took those honors.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 4
2009 Race 24
Jul. 11, 2009
Riverside Raceway

This was the round that we could not host at Bill's back in May. Mike Smalley, our host, prepared the three-car Ford GT40 set and a token Ferrari 512-three Fords and a would-have-been-such that the Fords would win every heat; much to Mike's consternation, no one told this to the Ferrari, which won several rounds when SFJ changed the lane assignments before the race. Our racer friend from last year, Steve Schrader, making his first appearance this year, taught many of us some lessons, lapping the slower drivers like a thirsty dog (yours truly will leave the visuals to you.) In the end, the usual suspects stormed the podium, with newest member Craig just off in fourth and Johnny-come-very-lately Steve Schrader a strong fifth.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 3
2009 Race 15
May. 2, 2009
Targa Florio

An old habit had to be broken-namely, calling a racer in a particular car as opposed to a particular lane, especially since the lanes were shared. With the congestion of four cars in two lanes (actually, in one stretch, one lane, and that with a wicked hairpin), there were plenty of collisions and pile-ups with the track blocked on more than one occasion; the town square in the upper right of the layout was especially prone to close calls and T-bones. The teething problems of this circuit also made themselves known; car 4 was not counting properly, which led to some wild variance in lap counts. SFJ made the executive decision to award a flat 12 laps to everyone as a default score for that car (and so as not to screw up the driver metrics), thus taking that car out of play.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 2
2009 Race 13
Apr. 4, 2009
Circuit Villeneuve

The jump to light speed was made with the Slot.it class, and they were every bit the spaceships about which they're written. White and orange were the difficult lanes this time; the track was re-profiled to alleviate the problems of the hairpin for orange near "Lac Jacques", but now the car on white had random de-slot problems of its own; whoever mastered these would earn the victory. In a late charge, Terry De Los Santos did this best to earn the win, but again it was not a usual-suspects lockout; while all three were on the podium, Bruce Talamon managed to tie for a bronze, with that same unnamed person again just shy for fifth, this time by a mere 0.2 laps. Adding to the drama, first through eighth were separated by only 3 laps.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 1
2009 Race 4
Jan. 31, 2009
Nigelstone

The open-wheelers made their debut today, and this is the class that yours truly usually does well with, and this was true today as well, hanging around the top five all race, finishing a well-done fourth. One of the usual suspects was late getting to the race, but he made it in time to do his four stints, and he still showed a strong third even with no practice. Our host and the circuit's namesake, Nigel Rick, said under his breath during the webcast, "This is going to be a tight race", and indeed it was, with the podium spread by only 0.4 laps, with yours truly merely 1.5 laps down. There were three ties among the 21 competitors, and, to show just how close it was, fourth through eighteenth-sixteen racers, counting the tie for 18th-tallied a spread of only 4.4 laps! If space permits, I'll do a chart showing how close this was.
