Series Race 7
2009 Race 38
Oct. 17, 2009
Woodside Raceway

With November and December approaching, we feel the championship portion of the schedule approaching, and this was the first class to be closed; with upcoming editions of the race reports, class final tables will be published once available. This time, the loaner on red (why is it always that one?) had no brakes, which made for a very conservative drive for those borrowing. The usual suspects again swept the podium, but Terry DLS took top honors this time. Note that the first four drivers stole almost all of the top-fives. This rarely happens.

Editor note: The red lane had as much brakes as any other, but a slight rise and dip in the track just before turn one was causing the braids to loose contact with the rails, taking away the brakes from the car just as you entered the corner. Placing the nose down hard early in the braking zone, by lifting the throttle, caused the car to work just as expected. I have to thank Mike Pawl for pointing this out to me after I had two severe crashes in my first three laps. cw

"The New Face of Slot Car Racing"

The subtitle to today's event was indeed truthful, as we had 21 drivers show for this team event-three children among them! With Jeff Vasquez and his two sons, as well as newcomer Burt Campbell and his son, the past, present and future were all well represented. (Where were Robert and James when we needed them?) This led to a novel approach on how to conduct the race so that some sort of fairness could be guaranteed; the teams with kids were able to forgo their pit stops, letting them drive throughout, and everyone drove for 10 minute heats. Team DLS (Terry De Los Santos, Eddie Shorer, Stan Smith, Ed Beer, Mike Pawl) snagged pole with a lap of 8.201 seconds, followed very closely by Team Snipes (Daniel, Stephen Farr-Jones, Alvin Tunstill, Burt Campbell, David Campbell) at 8.205 (SFJ specifically asked me to make a point about Stan outdoing him, so there), Team Smalley (Michael, Gary Woods, Bill Polakow, Jeff Vasquez and sons) at 8.223, and finally Team Williamson (Craig, Thomas Lauffenberger, J.R. Ewing, Nigel Rick, Christophe Deluy) off the pace at 8.736.

The opening stanza saw very testy racing, especially at the end; with two longtail Porsches on the inner lanes and both Michael and SFJ facing each other, there was plenty of slapping going on (and among the cars too). Team Williamson quietly did a nice sting on what is usually the most difficult lane, red, to take an early advantage over Team DLS; as it would turn out, this wasn't so much a team race as a dual match between those who are still contesting the season team title.

Orange lane showed itself to be formidable, as well; at the half, Team Williamson maintained an edge, but on the one lane where head-to-head numbers were available, they were 2 laps down. Would this be an omen for the rest of the day?

Some difficulties were experienced during the third quarter; both a car and a controller failed, but not on the same lane, causing about a 10-minute delay. This didn't deter either of the interested parties, who happened to be the leaders, and it was all still to play for at three-quarters-time. Team Williamson still led by 14 laps, but trailed by about 6 in the two head-to-head. With Team DLS heading to red, which today was the favored lane, they seemed to have taken the initiative.

A brief disruption in power to green marred the final round, but not severely as it was caught quickly and rectified. As Teams Williamson and DLS duked it out on white and red respectively, neither could shake the other; in fact, they were even after 30 minutes. Terry couldn't catch the Williamson anchor in the remaining 10 minutes, and, even with a minor braid issue on white, he could only pull back four laps of the deficit, and Team Williamson escaped with a hard-earned victory, DLS only 9.5 laps in arrears.

It seems like there's always something going strange with our races as of late, and this one didn't disappoint; the controller on the orange lane had a problem with it such that, not only did one need to squeeze the throttle to move, but lateral pressure was also needed, as the wiper was not contacting the brass buttons within. (The controller problem was later found to be something else undefined. ed.) This handicap was evidenced in all of us, except the usual suspects (of course), who leapt to the podium positions with ease.

Series Race 5
2009 Race 24
Jul. 11, 2009
Riverside Raceway

This was the round that we could not host at Bill's back in May. Mike Smalley, our host, prepared the three-car Ford GT40 set and a token Ferrari 512-three Fords and a would-have-been-such that the Fords would win every heat; much to Mike's consternation, no one told this to the Ferrari, which won several rounds when SFJ changed the lane assignments before the race. Our racer friend from last year, Steve Schrader, making his first appearance this year, taught many of us some lessons, lapping the slower drivers like a thirsty dog (yours truly will leave the visuals to you.) In the end, the usual suspects stormed the podium, with newest member Craig just off in fourth and Johnny-come-very-lately Steve Schrader a strong fifth.

2009 Race 21
Jun. 6, 2009

We stepped back a decade or so for the second race, but the feeling was the same, if not the result. One of the loaners had no brakes due to the gearing, and that played havoc with all the white lane borrowers. The usual suspects did their dirty work, but Craig (still a probationary Suspect) split them to take second.

The range was greater in this class, as was expected to be since these were faster cars; the last statistical racer (15th was not considered due to anomaly) was around 80% of the winner's pace. A bit more bashing and crashing happened in this one, as was also expected, which contributed to the variance. The usual suspects flipped places on this podium, but Cruzin' Bob kept his bronze.

It was now time for the greatest generation (as I call them) to take the stage, and, without the benefit of the Ortmann tires that the F1s had, it was a slidefest. This, while increasing the variability of the statistics, did not affect the racing; quite the contrary, as it provided some aesthetic racing. The usual suspects, all three of them, took the same spots on the podium, with some shuffling below them; yours truly had a decent, if uninspired, seventh place finish with a top-5 in one lane.
