Series Race 7
2008 Race 41
Dec. 13, 2008
Circuit Villeneuve

Our favorite adopted class served as the grand final, and the slamming and banging continued-with the Slot.its taking it all and asking for more. Even at 10 volts, they were blindingly fast, and added with the particulars of the Circuit, the usual mayhem ensued. Michael Smalley and Bob Beck kept their podium positions, with Terry DLS taking the final bronze.

Nov. 1, 2008
Silverlake Speedway

Now the really fast cars came to the fore, and on this hourglass of terror, we figured (that is, figure-8ed) that we'd have another crash fest. At some instances, it did resemble a NASCAR race with the "big one" happening a few times. Once the smoke cleared (that was Bob Beck's motor giving way-KA-BLAMMO!), Michael Smalley did it again, with Daniel Snipes back in his familiar place and Terry De Los Santos picking up the last rung. Yours truly ran another mid-pack performance, falling from fourth to eighth after having to fight the (OK, I'll say it) "unapeeling" orange lane. (Sorry; I had to get that one out; don't ask why…)

2008 Race 25
Jul. 19, 2008
Nigelstone

The eggshell returned to Nigelstone as Round 5 of the Drivers Championship was held. This was another venture in and of itself, with the yellow lane car essentially a rocketship and the red lane car a toggle switch (explain this one to your friends). When the carnage ended (and there was plenty to go around), Daniel cruised to a 2-lap victory, with the other usual suspect (Mike Smalley) second, Gary Woods picking up a well-earned bronze. Yours truly continued the suck-a-thon, surrendering with a ninth place finish.

Series Race 4
2008 Race 18
May. 18, 2008
SSI Raceway

The eggshell class was back-never mind that the race was at SSI, not Autodromo Baia Della Sud, the same slippery conditions prevailed due to the awesome power of these little models. This, of course, made for quite the interesting race, as each man pushed as far as he dared, again rewarding the driver making the fewest mistakes and de-slots. As usual, Michael Smalley did the double in fine fashion; in fine déjà vu fashion, yours truly pulled another last-heat-was-the-best run to snatch a second straight podium in this class. (Guess who's lobbying hard for this class next year?) Again, fourth through tenth were hotly contested, with a mere 3.8 laps deciding seven positions.

2008 Race 13
Apr. 26, 2008
Autodromo Baia della Sud

These frighteningly beautiful cars were frighteningly fast on the circuit, even at only 12 volts (and a personal favorite of mine). Erstwhile member Dennis Samson made a welcome return visit, and our women racers Opel and Sarah also returned (in celebration of Danica Patrick's pardon-the-pun maiden victory, perhaps?) Performances were spotty and inconsistent as spread braids became the order of the day. When the dust, leaves, and assorted debris, some of it automotive, settled, Tim Neja (another member we haven't seen for a while) took the victory, with Gary Woods second and Dennis third. Yours truly suffered from the get-go with braid issues on loaner cars and, despite a rocket performance on green, still only managed a ninth-place result.

Bring on the Ortmanns! This was a welcome change from the slipping and sliding in the F1 race earlier. The top half of the table put up some good numbers early as we adjusted to some fast-paced racing. In the end, Kiwi interloper Chris Radisich took the win, with the usual suspects in unusual places (second and third). Yours truly finished mid-pack again, choking horribly on the last heat on the red lane.

The first race of the 2008 season was a team race of Slot.it cars at Michael Smalley's amazing Riverside track. The Slot.it cars are always fun to drive on the grippy Ortmann tires and the cars look so good on Michael's detailed track.

It was a closely fought race. In the end, Michael and Stephen came up short and their team was beaten by both the team of Bob Beck, Terry De Los Santos, Gary Woods and JR Ewing in second, and the winning team of Daniel Snipes, Craig Williamson, Jom Wolfe and Mike Pawl, who commanded three of the four lanes.
