2008 Race 42
Dec. 13, 2008
Circuit Villeneuve

Slamming and banging was not what was desired in this class, but with the intrusion zones of the Circuit (pronounced sir-KWEE), it was inevitable, leading to some NFL-quality punts and total track blockages, especially at the infamous Lac Jacques hairpin. Michael Smalley did his usual dirt to win, with Bob Beck second and Craig Williamson third. Yours truly joined the race in progress, hot-footing it from San Bernardino, and managed a no-practice eighth.

Series Race 6
2008 Race 35
Oct. 18, 2008
Autodromo Baia della Sud

With the horrors of the 4WD race behind us, we now concentrated on the horrors of the F1 race, of which there were several. As in the first race, an inordinate number of cars were falling off the bridge of the Autodromo, where there was no guardrail, causing FISA to reconsider the circuit's homologation unless the necessary modifications are made. (No, Stan, we're not going to stop racing there; it's just a comment on how many went flying today.) This was a lesson in being careful what you wish for; yours truly borrowed a Ligier from SFJ, only to have the author drive himself out of the race in the first go. Riders and voltage spikes were common; a crash in the last heat set a club record in number of pieces, not to mention distance traveled, of debris, so whatever was being driven is now a parts car at best.

Series Race 4
2008 Race 28
Aug. 16, 2008
Farrout Raceway

Open wheels, open beers, open sores-it all spelled trouble during the second race as drivers nerfed each other with their tires (though none as spectacularly as the "nerf into the tree" pulled off last year on Yves Montand, er, Bill Polakow). Round 9 featured a particularly humorous 3-car nerf that happened on the bridge right at the horn, so a furious marshalling went for naught as the affected squeezed their guns to no avail. The usual suspects again battled tooth and nail (Dan Snipes battled tooth since he's the dentist, which left the nail for Mike Smalley), especially in the last heat where they were head-to-head and next to each other, each having weathered the obstruction of our youngsters for a heat. Once the final totals were in, Daniel Snipes took gold, with Michael Smalley silver and SFJ bronze. Yours truly didn't sniff the medal stand this time but drove competently to a seventh position finish. (Note: half the field failed their drug tests afterward, but as there is no provision for this in the party's sporting constitution, the table was not altered. The offenders were encouraged to fail again after the next race, and after that, and so on.)

SCX F1 1970/80's
Series Race 3
2008 Race 19
Jun. 7, 2008
Nigelstone

It was enduro time again as we anxiously counted the days to the greatest race on planet Earth, while also sating our Formula 1 appetites by staging the Formula 1 non-stopper at Nigelstone. Mike Pawl snagged a nifty pole for Team Farr-Jones (Stephen, Craig Williamson, Russell Bracher) with Bill Schniedewind claiming second choice for Team Lauffenberger (yours truly, Stan Smith, Ed Beer), Grant Delgatty securing third for Team Cortez (Rene, Gary Woods, Bruce Talamon) and Team Snipes (Daniel, Chris Chan, Nigel Rick, Tim Weston) being left the Hobson's choice.

Small confusion reigned during the first act as the timer was set for teams of five, but only four actually did so due to Bob Beck's sudden cancellation. The idea was to actually have two pit stops instead of one, but in the end we opted for just ending things one minute short. Team Cortez looked strong after the first round, standing on 255 laps, with Team Farr-Jones second, 8 laps back, Team L 10 in arrears, and Team Snipes still in the tail by 14.

The second heat was uneventful as Team Cortez maintained, but curiously did not extend, its lead; Team Yours Truly nicked a couple laps off the lead, with Team Snipes still sighting the leader in its crosshairs a mere 10 laps down.

A command decision was made during the third stint of round three, as Team L changed cars while on the notorious red lane. (The guide flag on the original car was loose and hampering its handling, so this was within the guidelines.) Performance didn't help, though, as the team slid to the bottom, 23 laps to the bad side of yesterday.

Team Cortez was still nursing its lead, but was now on the same red lane that vexed us all day long. Team Snipes was second a mere 7 laps down, and Team Farr-Jones still in answering distance 14 laps away. As usual, Team L was left praying for another worst-to-first miracle.

A miracle did happen, but not this one, in the last heat. While Team L drove a valiant final stint on what was the best lane overall (green), falling only half a lap short of third place Team Farr-Jones, Team Cortez was driving for its life as the Snipers reeled them in. At the final gun, history was made-for the first time in the history of our club, we had a dead heat for the victory (yes, down to the tenth!) as both Team Cortez and Team Snipes finished on 1019.3 laps. (Stephen announced this whilst holding one finger over the cells on the spreadsheet to prolong the drama.)

Now, if only the movie ended like this

2008 Race 11
Mar. 15, 2008
SSI Raceway

Here is an irony most delicious: the year we as a club adopt an IROC-style class, the real thing goes out of business! (We should have, as a club, had a fundraiser and bought the naming rights, if not some of the cars, so we could do some 1:1 racing.) A slight issue with one of the cars during an early heat caused a slight delay; also, a sudden shower past the halfway point caused drivers to dive for the pits to don rain tires (should have known-race at Rene's, it's going to rain); other than that, it was business as usual. The usual suspects again finished at the top (it's the easiest quinella ticket in town to buy), with Terry DLS taking bronze. Our host Rene Cortez had an inspired run on his home track, taking an honorable fourth place. Yours truly had a better run of it this time, managing to hold in the top five through three of the four heats, finally slipping to sixth when Cruisin' Bob cruised past.

Mr. Model Car Raceway

Dan Snipes began an early assault on the 2008 overall crown by winning the first race, but not quite in the dominating fashion we expect from him. Occasional racer Tim Neja pulled a surprise second, with fellow part-timer Chris Radisich taking the bronze. Mike Smalley finished a disappointing (for him) fourth, and there were some other surprise finishes; yours truly was not one of them, but still managed a decent ninth place.
