Drivers' Championship
Series Race 6
2008 Race 32
Oct. 4, 2008
Farrout Raceway

Things got off to a jump start-not literally, but enough, due to yours truly accidentally posting the racing orders to the wrong races. SFJ specified different entry lists for each race, and your humble reporter accidentally interposed them, which led to the first heat being merely exhibitional. Nothing much changed with respect to the plot of the story, though, as the only one of the usual suspects present, Michael Smalley, won handily. SFJ finished a season-high second, with Terry De Los Santos third. Yours truly salvaged an otherwise average race with a nice turn on green to finish fifth.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 5
2008 Race 25
Jul. 19, 2008
Nigelstone

The eggshell returned to Nigelstone as Round 5 of the Drivers Championship was held. This was another venture in and of itself, with the yellow lane car essentially a rocketship and the red lane car a toggle switch (explain this one to your friends). When the carnage ended (and there was plenty to go around), Daniel cruised to a 2-lap victory, with the other usual suspect (Mike Smalley) second, Gary Woods picking up a well-earned bronze. Yours truly continued the suck-a-thon, surrendering with a ninth place finish.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 4
2008 Race 23
Jul. 5, 2008
Mr. Model Car Raceway

IROC reared its head again two months after the last round, and again it showed who really knows how to drive these things. (Perhaps they would offer lessons?) This race had a much tighter distribution of scores and no shortages of drama, as Leigh Diffey would say, with positions 1, 2, 3 and 6 in play in the final heat. Once everything was double-checked, Chris Radisich emerged victorious, with Michael Smalley second and Daniel Snipes third. Yours truly did best on the outers and strangely enough had another mid-pack photo finish, tying for eighth this time with Craig Williamson.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 3
2008 Race 16
May. 3, 2008
Riverside Raceway

A freewheeling spirit permeated the second race-literally-as the loaner cars, 3 Ford GT40s and a Ferrari, all sidewinders by Hornby, came without brakes, making for a "driving on eggshells" experience. Scores were still decent as racers dealt with racing the lane, let alone each other. (Maybe a suggestion for next year-2-wire racing by disconnecting the brakes?) Mike Smalley did the double, winning the race, with Chris Radisich second and Chris Chan knocking out usual suspect Daniel Snipes by taking third. A glorious start proved an ignoble finish by biting the big rubber donut on red lane, freefalling from a top-five to tenth, passing such dignitaries as J.R. Ewing (who otherwise isn't mentioned much in these reports, but hey, talk to the editor...)

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 2
2008 Race 11
Mar. 15, 2008
SSI Raceway

Here is an irony most delicious: the year we as a club adopt an IROC-style class, the real thing goes out of business! (We should have, as a club, had a fundraiser and bought the naming rights, if not some of the cars, so we could do some 1:1 racing.) A slight issue with one of the cars during an early heat caused a slight delay; also, a sudden shower past the halfway point caused drivers to dive for the pits to don rain tires (should have known-race at Rene's, it's going to rain); other than that, it was business as usual. The usual suspects again finished at the top (it's the easiest quinella ticket in town to buy), with Terry DLS taking bronze. Our host Rene Cortez had an inspired run on his home track, taking an honorable fourth place. Yours truly had a better run of it this time, managing to hold in the top five through three of the four heats, finally slipping to sixth when Cruisin' Bob cruised past.

Drivers' Championship
Series Race 1
2008 Race 4
Feb. 2, 2008
Circuit Villeneuve

It wasn't so much a race as a 4-way wrestling match on wheels. The usual suspects medalled again, with Nigel pulling a well-deserved fifth place. This was the first race in our new "Driver's Championship"-six races where only loaner cars may be used by everyone, so that driver skill is tested (think of it as an IROC class), and, based on the results, this looks like a keeper.
