Series Race 7
2008 Race 36
Nov. 1, 2008
Silverlake Speedway

The new figure-8 track known as Silverlake Raceway debuted for this round, and it showed its teeth quickly during the practice. (So, for that matter, did we, after nausea induced from watching the cars fly around the bullring caused some of us to part ways with lunch.) With lap times hovering around three seconds and the resulting stats threatening to ruin the driver metrics, it was thought that the rest of us could gang up on the usual suspects and take a podium away for once; alas, this was not to be, as Michael Smalley blistered the track (and a few tires) en route to the victory. Usual suspect Daniel Snipes was relegated to fourth, as home-track-advantage Craig Williamson took silver and Terry De Los Santos won bronze.

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
Series Race 6
2008 Race 33
Oct. 4, 2008
Farrout Raceway

The Drivers Championship concluded today with the 50s/60s cars, and, blessed with a first heat on the good lane, yours truly got off to a right flyer (as Murray Walker might say). The usual suspect took over after the second heats, but it was a battle like he had never seen from his nearest competitor. The third leg was a net gain for your author, with merely half a lap separating the top two, with a common lane left to decide. The challenger went first and offered a good account, only to be bettered by the reigning champion in the final showdown, with only 1.4 laps deciding the day. Our Host SFJ managed a second podium on the day in third.

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
Series Race 5
2008 Race 24
Jul. 19, 2008
Nigelstone

This was a mixed bag as some of our erstwhile drivers found their way back to the nest, joined by a newcomer who held his own well enough. The Flys showed their usual twitches, and when the tire dust settled, Terry De Los Santos edged Mike Smalley (who's still grumbling "Aw, nuts!" under his breath) by a mere 0.1 laps, with the other usual suspect Daniel Snipes taking bronze. The theme for the day was start fast, finish slow, as yours truly started mid-pack but drove three touchy lanes progressively worse, stumbling to a 13th-place finish.

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
Series Race 4
2008 Race 20
Jun. 21, 2008
Circuit Villeneuve

Lac Jacques, as the area near the hairpin is known, claimed an inordinate number of victims (or today it may have been volunteers; perhaps the drivers needed a dip) this race, as did attrition; at least two cars went down during heats, causing their drivers no small consternation (translation: it made their drivers hot-couldn't help saying). Terry and Craig swapped places in this race's results, with another maiden podium claimed, this time by Bill Schniedewind. Yours truly had two statistically odd things happen-one car that broke on the first lap (yes, it was a Ford!) and one that was too fast for conditions (a Jag D-Type) which contributed to a disgusting 11th-place result.

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
Series Race 3
2008 Race 16
May. 3, 2008
Riverside Raceway

A freewheeling spirit permeated the second race-literally-as the loaner cars, 3 Ford GT40s and a Ferrari, all sidewinders by Hornby, came without brakes, making for a "driving on eggshells" experience. Scores were still decent as racers dealt with racing the lane, let alone each other. (Maybe a suggestion for next year-2-wire racing by disconnecting the brakes?) Mike Smalley did the double, winning the race, with Chris Radisich second and Chris Chan knocking out usual suspect Daniel Snipes by taking third. A glorious start proved an ignoble finish by biting the big rubber donut on red lane, freefalling from a top-five to tenth, passing such dignitaries as J.R. Ewing (who otherwise isn't mentioned much in these reports, but hey, talk to the editor...)

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
Series Race 2
2008 Race 12
Apr. 5, 2008
Mr. Model Car Raceway

And what a gang it was! Most of the regulars, along with our newest newbie Opel Barnes and two additional visitors Derek and Cornell Lewis, showed to make a wonderful team race meet. Mike Pawl scored pole for Team Smalley, followed by Bill Polakow for Team Cruzin' Scott, SFJ for Team Williamson and, lastly, Stan Smith for Team Beck. Russell Bracher and Tim Weston pulled double-duty due to a non-multiple of 4 entered; Tim was on Team Smalley and Russ on Team Williamson, but they will be listed on the team with whom they score better.

In the early going, it was a slugfest on the outers, as Teams Scott and Beck fought it out within 2 laps of each other; Team Smalley had some early misfortune with slow driving, as did Team Scott when their car broke (though their troubles were more mitigated by a track call.) At the quarter pole, it was Scott, Beck and Williamson and Smalley, with only 6 laps separating 1st and 3rd.

In the second leg, the white lane began to show its teeth, as a disagreeable controller made an already-hard-to-drive-car even more difficult, causing some team captains to scratch their heads about lane choice strategy. At halftime, it looked like a two horse race, with Team Williamson leading the way, Team Scott in close pursuit, and Beck and Smalley left to squabble over third.

In the third leg, more problems continued, though these could only be attributed to lousy driving, at least on the part of yours truly; at the three-quarters pole, Team Beck was solidly mired in last place, not even getting the crumbs from the table. Team Williamson had amassed a lead of 23 laps on second-place Team Scott, who in turn had 13 laps in hand on Team Smalley. The final leg would prove interesting, as the leaders would encounter the biting white lane, Team Scott would have a chance to catch on blue, and Team Smalley would have its own perils on red. Was a cataclysm brewing?

Alas, it was not. In the homeward leg, everything held station, with Team Williamson taking overall victory by a solid 37 laps.

2008 Race 7
Feb. 16, 2008

Faster-looking cars were no faster than the cars of Race 1, but still plenty exciting to watch as dreams of Mike Delaney filled our fancy (not to mention the blonde walking her dogs in front of the apartment, but that's another report.) We-know-who finished we-know-where, with Terry DLS joining them. A power issue during round seven caused a delay as the red lane went down. (Kudos to Gary and Mike Smalley for the repair job; it still proved anticlimactic for yours truly.)
