TEAM RACE 6

Stan Smith's Baia della Sud

The Team Race at Stan's Autodromo Baia della Sud was another closely fought battle between four good teams. Team Smalley with Michael, Jim Wolfe and Stan Smith used an exceptional run on Green to position themselves for the win. Team Williamson with Craig, Chris Chan and Laurent Bives fell victim to a bad run on Yellow, with a stubborn track power problem, and ended in third despite besting Team Wiseman, with Jim. Terry de los Santos and Mike Pawl on all three of the other lanes. These two teams were seperated by just 1.2 laps after 1030 laps run. Team Lauffenberger had a good run on Blue, but suffered on the other three lanes and finished fourth.

Baia della Sud had some low power sections on all four lanes when run at the low voltage used. This made the driving especially challenging, as the cars would creep along for a few sections and then suddenly accelerate. A higher voltage setting would have probably made the track less sensitive to braid and conductivity issues. None the less, it was an exciting race with a lot of cheering and fretting going on throughout. The Smith's once again put out some great snacks, and we basked in the deluxe accomodations of their excellent hilltop venue.

RACE 6
Nov 3, 2007
Nigel Rick's Nigelstone

There was more bounce to the ounce in this class -- again, literally -- as the mudders slogged their circuits around the plastic tarmac. Combined with the Parma controllers, it made for true ice driving-although the tires curiously bit in the most unusual places, causing cars to roll out of the slot on numerous occasions. Mike Smalley regained his usual top spot on the podium, followed by a nice run from Bob Scott. Terry DLS snagged his third podium of the year, while usually strong contenders had some fallings off; Daniel had an (unprecedented?) eighth, while yours truly, Thomas, found new ways to mess up today, tagging a (also unprecedented?) 16th place finish. This is the second time this year that he (i.e. me, Thomas) has scored a low in points for one day of driving. (Not to make this self-centric, of course…)

RACE 5
Aug 4, 2007
Stan's Auto Dromo Baia Della Sud

What a difference a weekend makes! After making the necessary repairs to Circuito Baia Della Sud, it regained its FarrOut Class A licensing and, due to an unforeseen absence of the scheduled host, filled in for Meet 15. There were minor connectivity issues, but they were quickly and equitably resolved to make for a much more enjoyable race experience. Kudos to chief engineers SFJ (in absentia) and Gary for the really technical stuff.

After the slipping and sliding, the usual duo took the top spots, with Bob Beck maintaining a nice 3rd, much to his surprise. John Emmons managed an excellent 4th in his return with his son, and Terry DLS rounded out the top 5. Yours truly had a lousy first heat (continuity issues again) and limped home to 11th place.

One note: FISA launched a kangaroo hearing when it was discovered that Ed Beer possessed information and technology from Ferrari (he bought a new SCX car and forgot to take the magnet out before his first heat). FISA's verdict was that Beer was guilty of running with the technology, but, since it was unintentional, declined to impose sanctions this time. The slot racing community was pleased with this outcome, and the results as posted are those that actually occurred on 4 August. (An asterisk will accompany his results for this event.) ~ Thomas L.

A Mid-Pack Change of the Guard
By Thomas Lauffenberger

The more things change (below the waterline) the more they stay the same; as the table shows, the usual suspects took the top two places, followed by a surprise in Bob Scott taking bronze today (cruisin’ indeed!). Also surprising was a stunning 4th-place finish by Laurent Bives (one of these days we’ll need a French flag to hang for the podium ceremony; perhaps club dues could cover that) and Terry De Los Santos’ 7th place result. Lousy driving by yours truly led to a season-worst 15th place result; only the fine cuisine by Quenna (must give her a shout here) led to any happiness that round for me.

RACE 3
Mar. 17, 2007
Farrout Raceway

A large group of racers and friends gathered at SFJ's Farrout Raceway to contest the 4wd and Slot-It races. The twists and turns of Stephen's difficult track resulted in much rolling of 4wd cars for many.

In 4wd Michael took the win over Daniel by less than one lap. Stephen was third. Jim Wiseman, Alvin Tunstill, newcomer Tim Neja and John Emmons each had excellent runs to fill the top six with a tie between Tim and John. The five drivers in 3rd thru 6th were seperated by just 2.9 laps. Thomas had what must have been an unsatisfying race, but did manage a Top Five on orange.
