Stan Smith's Baia della Sud

The Team Race at Stan's Autodromo Baia della Sud was another closely fought battle between four good teams. Team Smalley with Michael, Jim Wolfe and Stan Smith used an exceptional run on Green to position themselves for the win. Team Williamson with Craig, Chris Chan and Laurent Bives fell victim to a bad run on Yellow, with a stubborn track power problem, and ended in third despite besting Team Wiseman, with Jim. Terry de los Santos and Mike Pawl on all three of the other lanes. These two teams were seperated by just 1.2 laps after 1030 laps run. Team Lauffenberger had a good run on Blue, but suffered on the other three lanes and finished fourth.

Baia della Sud had some low power sections on all four lanes when run at the low voltage used. This made the driving especially challenging, as the cars would creep along for a few sections and then suddenly accelerate. A higher voltage setting would have probably made the track less sensitive to braid and conductivity issues. None the less, it was an exciting race with a lot of cheering and fretting going on throughout. The Smith's once again put out some great snacks, and we basked in the deluxe accomodations of their excellent hilltop venue.

Nigel's Nigelstone

In Saturday's team race at Nigel's excellent track, Nigelstone, Daniel's team took first place with the highest lap totals for each lane except Green. With five consistently top performing drivers this was a strong team and they proved it on the track. Stephen Farr-Jones' team was second just under 12 laps back, and had the highest lap total on Green. Michael Smalley's team finished less than four laps ahead of Rene's team, which suffered a wheel coming off during Rene's stint on Yellow. Another car was substituted during the run, but several laps were already lost. The breakdown was probably the difference between third and fourth for their team.

Congratulations to all who raced. There were some very close battles in all heats, and the number of deslots was very low, even on Nigel's difficult track. The quality of driving across the club is really improving, and some fairly new drivers are hounding others with many years of experience. The experienced drivers should be thanked for showing us novices around. Nigel also deserves special kudos for flying the racing flags out in front of his house whenever we meet there. It really does set the stage for the day's races from the moment you arrive.

Race Report by Thomas
Note to future race directors: anyone named Murphy is hereby officially and permanently banned from further race meets. No, it was not the case that someone actually showed up with that name, and if any human beings with the surname do show, they will (almost) certainly be welcomed by the group at large. My mention has to do with the classic Law of Murphy; i.e. anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time. He chose to strike twice at this fourth meeting of the season; the first instance was deemed to be an act of god (N.B. this is not a misspelling, since our beloved (?) benevolent dictator caused it, and I will not dignify him with a "G"; he accidentally kicked the plug supplying power to the circuit and DS system out of the socket, wiping out the first 3½ minutes of race time.) The race was restarted in its entirety, only to discover, after another 8 minutes, that the blue lane was not registering laps. After one member supplied a manual counting device (who knew people carried these things?), the race was restarted (yes, again) with minimal hassle and reduced heat times; drivers were now reduced to 8-minute stints, with the usual 1-minute pit stop. As of this writing, there were no problems, fights, or other acts of dictator.

Team Farr-Jones won the pole and elected to finish on the fast lane. Team Chan started on the fast blue lane and was in the lead at the quarter pole. Team Smalley elected to go outside-in and was a respectable second after the first round. Team Snipes, unusually left with no lane choice, was relegated to finish on the slower white lane, but posted decent scores on the outers (identical ones, in fact) and was trying to catch Smalley's hoped-for insurmountable lead after halftime. Speaking of Team Smalley, they were ahead by 28 laps at the half and struggling with an ill-handling Lola T70 during the third round; by all accounts, they managed to do well enough, surrendering 21 laps in the heat but maintaining their advantage with one round to go.

Some drama unfolded in the final round; after the second exchange, a wheel fell off the Chevron for the yellow lane, costing about 5 laps or so. A replacement was called in on the fly, and racing continued. Team Farr-Jones was able to win the final heat, but not nearly by enough to catch the leader; indeed, blue was the class lane all day, easily posting the highest totals in all four rounds. In the end, though, it was Team Smalley that prevailed, holding position once it was obtained during the second round.
