1964-74 Fly Le Mans
RACE 7
Dec 15, 2007
Bruce's Circuit Villeneuve

Circuit Villeneuve was as treacherous as ever, as your intrepid reporter compared the exercise to driving (or, for that matter, walking) on eggshells. The usual suspects finished 1-3, with Terry DLS sandwiched in between. Yours truly, Thomas, managed a steady freefall to finish 12th, which caused no small consternation due to the fact that he finished behind a pilot who wasn't there for three heats!!!

RACE 6
Oct 20, 2007
Gary's Woodside Raceway

With the twistiness and short laps of Woodside Raceway, Mike Smalley called it-"I think that there's going to be an upset today"-and sure enough, there was, as neither of the usual suspects, though making the podium, claimed the top step today (for this race, at least). That honor went, for the first time, to Terry De Los Santos (rah!), with Smalley and Snipes taking silver and bronze respectively. Host Gary took fourth.

RACE 5
July 21, 2007
Stan's Auto Dromo Baia Della Sud

The FarrOut Racing Club met again on July 23 to contest a pair of Le Mans classes, and this time Michael and Daniel split the wins with one race a piece.

It was like Italy in So Cal at Stan's beautifully located track. The hills of Palos Verdes are filled with olive trees and sometimes Stan's Artin track feels so slick you think the olive oil might be on the track. The challenge of the low traction and different power on different lanes and sections made for a challenging day, but these racers were up to it, and there was more laughing than moaning as the cars sometimes went from parade speed to full speed without moving the controller.

In the 60's-70's Fly class Michael drove his lovely dark blue Ford to a win over Daniel's little orange Carrera 6 in second. Jimmy Wolfe used his consistent driving to snatch a third place with the loaner cars. Gary Woods was not able to rise to the first he may have hoped for, but he did quite well to take a fourth, moving him into a tie for third for the class championship with Craig Williamson. Bob Scott and Craig rounded out the top six. The inconsistent conditions left several excellent drivers with top fives for a lane or two, without any real fruit to bear. Hats off to Thomas, Bruce, Stan and Terry for grabbing top fives without finishing in the top six. Some lanes just did not return good runs for them.

RACE 4
July 7, 2007
Chris' Mr Model Car Raceway

The new World Sports Car class has put on some great races this year, and the event at Chris Chan's was no exception. The new cars have opened the door for a crack at the usual aces. Gary Woods took advantage of the situation and grabbed a fine second place, finishing between Michael Smalley in first, and Daniel Snipes in third. Jim Wiseman, Bob Scott and Terry De Los Santos completed the top six. Chris Chan ran his Chaparral 2F for his first heat, but then thought better of it. He tried to come back with three top fives, but the tough pack still held him to 11th place! Thomas, Bruce and Stephen each also had top fives on one lane while finishing out of the top 6 overall.

Note that Gary has taken a fourth, and then a third, and now a second in this class. Will he take the next step to the top? Tune-in again in two weeks to find out.

A BIG thank you to Chris Chan for hosting 22 racers plus crew. I'm sure that the hot food and cold beverages were appreciated by everyone. Chris always goes far beyond what a race host needs to offer, so give him a bye next time he needs to pass.

RACE 2
Apr. 21, 2007
Nigelstone

For the first individual race in the new Le Mans 1960/70’s class we saw a great variety of cars and a lot of close racing. While Daniel solidly beat Michael to 1st and 2nd we had a first time 3rd place for Craig just 2/10ths of a lap ahead of Gary in 4th. We also had a super competitive race for 5th through 10th places with just 4/10ths of a lap between Bill and Thomas tied for 5th, Russell in 7th, Bob Scott and Stan tied for 8th and Tim Neja in 10th. I checked and I cannot find a time when 6 people were separated by just 4/10ths of a lap! Nigel the host was 11th and THEN we had 4 racers separated by another a 4/10ths of a lap between Stephen in 12th, Mike P in 13th, John in 14th and Jim Wolfe in 15th. Special mention to Chris Chan for running his Monogram Chaparral 2F and practicing with the King Cobra as well as a welcome to newbie Terry.

1964-74 Fly Le Mans
RACE 1
TEAM RACE 1
Feb. 17, 2007
Michael's Riverside Raceway

Note to future race directors: anyone named Murphy is hereby officially and permanently banned from further race meets. No, it was not the case that someone actually showed up with that name, and if any human beings with the surname do show, they will (almost) certainly be welcomed by the group at large. My mention has to do with the classic Law of Murphy; i.e. anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time. He chose to strike twice at this fourth meeting of the season; the first instance was deemed to be an act of god (N.B. this is not a misspelling, since our beloved (?) benevolent dictator caused it, and I will not dignify him with a "G"; he accidentally kicked the plug supplying power to the circuit and DS system out of the socket, wiping out the first 3½ minutes of race time.) The race was restarted in its entirety, only to discover, after another 8 minutes, that the blue lane was not registering laps. After one member supplied a manual counting device (who knew people carried these things?), the race was restarted (yes, again) with minimal hassle and reduced heat times; drivers were now reduced to 8-minute stints, with the usual 1-minute pit stop. As of this writing, there were no problems, fights, or other acts of dictator.

Team Farr-Jones won the pole and elected to finish on the fast lane. Team Chan started on the fast blue lane and was in the lead at the quarter pole. Team Smalley elected to go outside-in and was a respectable second after the first round. Team Snipes, unusually left with no lane choice, was relegated to finish on the slower white lane, but posted decent scores on the outers (identical ones, in fact) and was trying to catch Smalley's hoped-for insurmountable lead after halftime. Speaking of Team Smalley, they were ahead by 28 laps at the half and struggling with an ill-handling Lola T70 during the third round; by all accounts, they managed to do well enough, surrendering 21 laps in the heat but maintaining their advantage with one round to go.

Some drama unfolded in the final round; after the second exchange, a wheel fell off the Chevron for the yellow lane, costing about 5 laps or so. A replacement was called in on the fly, and racing continued. Team Farr-Jones was able to win the final heat, but not by enough to catch the leader; indeed, blue was the class lane all day, easily posting the highest totals in all four rounds. In the end, though, it was Team Smalley that prevailed, holding position once it was obtained during the second round.
